The Meating Room in St Albans is a small restaurant specialising in gourmet burgers. The menu is simple with classic flavours. If you live in St Albans you will recognise where the names of the burgers were derived from; a nice touch in our opinion!
The salted caramel milkshake was presented in a jar. The salted caramel flavour was weak and the consistency of the milkshake could have been a tad bit more thicker.
The carbonated drinks option was interesting with a selection of ‘posh pop’ on offer. The strawberry and rhubarb brought back childhood memories of rhubarb and custard sweets.
We dined here on its opening week; having ordered the classic ‘Verulamium Burger’. We were not overly impressed. The burger was bloody; not quite cooked to a perfect medium and the patty lacked seasoning.
On our second visit to The Meating Room we ordered the ‘St Peters’ with added emmantel cheese which gave the patty the much needed kick the Verulamium lacked. We also ordered their signature burger ‘The Meating Room’ which consisted of turkey bacon, applewood smoked cheddar and chilli BBQ sauce. The patty needed a bit more seasoning in this burger. Taste-wise their burgers have improved since our first visit but average incomparison to some of the other halal gourmet burgers we have tried.
The Meating Room has a lot of potential. It has filled a gap in the halal market for the large Muslim consumers in St Albans who are now no longer limited to fast food joints. For that they deserve a salute.
Is it worth a visit? Brioche Burgers and Stax Diner rank highly on our list of great gourmet burgers. If you happen to be near St Albans then do check this place out but perhaps not make a “very” long journey just for it
